Who needs to comply
MTD is rolling out in phases by income
Your qualifying income is your gross self-employment turnover plus gross property income, before expenses.
£50,000+
Sole traders and landlords with qualifying income above £50,000 must already be using MTD for Income Tax.
£30,000+
The threshold drops to £30,000, bringing many more sole traders and landlords into scope.
£20,000+
A further drop to £20,000 is expected to bring around 900,000 more people into MTD.

Ask away — we’d rather answer one now than fix something in January. Email our UK-based team at info@mtdfix.com or send us a message from the homepage. A real accountant replies, not a chatbot.
1. Do I actually have to do this, or can I carry on as I am?
If your combined self-employment and property income is over the threshold for your band, it’s the law — not a software upgrade you can decline. Self Assessment as you know it is being replaced for you. There’s no opt-out form, only a formal exemption HMRC grants in limited cases. The one thing you do get to choose is who sets it up and who keeps it running each quarter.
2. How do I know if I'm in, and when I start?
HMRC looks at your qualifying income: gross sole-trade turnover plus gross rent, added together, before a single expense. That’s what catches people out — a £38,000 trade plus a £16,000 rental flat is £54,000 of qualifying income, even if your profit is £22,000. Employment, dividends, pensions and interest don’t count.
- Over £50,000 → started April 2026
- £30,000–£50,000 → April 2027
- £20,000–£30,000 → planned for April 2028
3. What actually changes compared to my old tax return?
Three things. Records kept digitally instead of in a notebook. A summary sent to HMRC every three months instead of once a year. And a Final Declaration at year end that replaces the SA100 — same 31 January deadline, same tax bill. The tax rules haven’t changed. The frequency and the format have.
4. Do I have to pay tax four times a year now?
No — and this is the biggest myth going. Quarterly updates are information, not invoices. Your payment dates stay exactly as they are: 31 January and 31 July, with payments on account where they apply. Nothing about MTD pulls your tax bill forward.
5. When are the quarterly updates due?
Quarters run 6 April–5 July, 6 July–5 October, 6 October–5 January and 6 January–5 April, each due by the 7th of the following month: 7 August, 7 November, 7 February, 7 May. If your bookkeeping runs to calendar months, you can elect for calendar quarters instead — we set that election up at onboarding so filing matches how you already work.
6. Do the quarterly figures have to be perfect?
They’re cumulative summaries, not mini tax returns — no adjustments, capital allowances or reliefs needed until Final Declaration, and a later quarter corrects an earlier one automatically. But “rough is allowed” isn’t a licence to let the books rot. Four sloppy quarters become one very expensive January. We reconcile as we go, so year end is a review, not a rescue.
7. Can I keep my spreadsheet, and do I have to scan every receipt?
The spreadsheet can stay if it’s linked to HMRC through bridging software and you’re not retyping figures between systems — manual copy-and-paste breaks the digital link HMRC requires. For receipts you need a digital record of each transaction, not a photo of every slip, though keeping images makes an enquiry far less painful. A bank feed plus a receipt-capture app covers most of it without you touching a keyboard.
8. What happens if I miss a deadline?
Late submissions run on penalty points — one per missed deadline, a £200 penalty at four points, then £200 for each further miss. Points expire after a clean run. Late payment is sharper: nothing for 15 days, then a charge from day 16, a second at day 30, and interest on top after that. A big January bill left drifting gets expensive fast.
9. Can I get out of it — and what if I have several income sources?
There’s a genuine digital exclusion exemption (age, disability, no reliable broadband, religious grounds), but HMRC has to grant it; you can’t self-declare, and a refused application leaves you less time to prepare. And if you have more than one income source, each is reported separately — two trades plus a rental means three updates every quarter, on the same date. That’s exactly where the DIY route falls over.
10. Why use MTDFix instead of just buying an app?
An app gives you a filing button. We give you a UK accountant who knows your business, does the quarterly work for you, reviews the year before it’s declared, and picks up the phone when HMRC writes. Software won’t spot that you’ve booked a capital purchase as a repair — a person will. Late sign-ups, missed quarters and a year of unrecorded transactions are all normal work for us. Bring it in whatever state it’s in.
